Welcome to our section all about the IELTS exam. Here you will find information about our IELTS preparation courses, an overview of the IELTS exam, and resources to help you get the band you need.
The International English Language Testing System (or IELTS) is an exam that comes in two different categories:
  • General Exam
  • Academic Exam
The general exam is usually used for immigration purposes while the academic exam is used for those who want to join an English speaking institution of higher education and also for professionals.
It is the world’s most popular English test for higher education and immigration.

Students are placed in different bands according to their ability in each of the skills. The fours skills tested are:

Students can be placed in bands 1-9. It is important to know what band you require for what you want to do. Asking for either a 6, 6.5, or 7 is very common, and this is roughly a B2-C1 level in terms of the European Framework.

General vs Academic
The listening and the speaking are the same for both types of tests. The difference between the two exams can be seen in the writing and reading sections, where the academic tasks are more difficult and usually longer (with fewer questions).

Know which type of test you need to take and study for the appropriate test.

How to Study for IELTS

I really recommend listening as much as possible as well as reading as much as possible. Get the practice papers and ensure that you are familiar with the type of questions you are going to be asked.
The writing and speaking section are a little different because you have to get feedback. Also, to be able to write well in the IELTS exam, you must internalise the correct written English.
